What the hell is skug?
skug – Journal für Musik (www.skug.at) is a quarterly music magazine, founded in
Vienna in 1990. skug deals with music, film, literature and art in
a contemporary way in presenting them in a historical/sociological
framework. Because of its long and intensive occupation with these
topics, the magazine offers a broad range of affiliated media,
institutions and agencies. In recent years, skug has covered a
broad range of experimental/improvised and pop music with a
discursive approach and established networks between fans,
musicians and researchers. Quite since the very beginning, skug had
a strong focus on art-production from Eastern European countries,
collaborated e.g. with institutions like Tamizdat (Prague), NB
Research Digest (Moscow) and many others. skug tries to act as a
transdisciplinary seismograph for socio-political, popcultural and
scientific phenomena towards all kinds of contemporary media- and
art production.
Verein zur Förderung von Subkultur/skug is as well organising
concerts and festivals. The first festival, Extended Europe (2001),
was dedicated to experimental music from Ex-YU, Russia and Hungary
and the beginning of an exchange of Austrian-East European
musicians. This was successfully continued with Festival joint
project SoundBridges (2005) with partners A4 (Bratislava) and
Ultrahang Foundation (Budapest). Especially implemented into
SoundBridges was the improv meeting COMPANY where musicians from
Slovakia and Hungary spontaneously met musicians from Austria,
Germany, France, Great Britain and Japan.
